Character u+2009 also known as thin SP is an Unicode variant of the ordinary space. It can be useful when ''italics'' get too near to the following text — arguably a bug in the font or browser, but if adding a thin SP helps nobody cares whose fault it was. For backwards compatibility <small>&nbsp;</small> used to be a better workaround, but the Unicode solution should be now acceptable. If you know u+2009 by heart just type &#x2009; instead of {{thinsp}} — this template is only for those folks who tend to forget the Unicode point.
